What’s great when running is “what if?”
Today it took me to a cliff
Along a path I’d sometimes seen
But where of course I’d never been.
These detours sometimes fizzle out;
The folks who know what they’re about
Would first have Google Earthed the spot
And thereby missed out on a lot.
Sometimes I’m blocked by wall or fence
Sometimes by vegetation dense
Enough to show the path’s not used
And once, just once, I’ve been abused.
Quite often it’s the merest chance –
That corner-of-the-eye type glance –
Which leads you, as it did today,
Effectively to go astray
To some new view, to some new sight;
An unexpected trip highlight.
The scene below was Suda Bay
With little islands on the way.
The shelves of rock beneath the sea
As clear as they could ever be;
The sharp fresh scent of seaside air;
Cliffs edged with flowers everywhere,
The purple of a thistle head,
Bright yellow and the poppies’ red.
No careful planning could create
The joy of finding things through fate.
