PHOTOGRAPHY AND POEMS

THE BALLAD OF CHAOS CORNER

I need a coffee and some eggs;

So – not prepared to use my legs –

I park my pickup right outside

And make the roadway half as wide.

Before I go into the shop

Two friends come by and also stop,

Lean out their windows, have a chat,

And none of us have noticed that

The Chania bus is now in view

Meanwhile a truck is squeezing through

The wrong side of a serried rank

Of scooters parked outside the bank.

It is of course not our concern

That all the cars that want to turn

Are backed up almost out of sight

Both to my left and to my right.

All baking slowly in the sun –

They’ll have to wait until I’ve done

My shopping, since of course I am

Quite unaware there is a jam.

Why should I care at all about

Some frenzied hooting or a shout?

That’s all outside – it’s in the street.

Inside its cool and there I meet

More friends, my frappe slakes my thirst.

I now can go outside but first

I have to search my bag to see

Just where it was I put my key.

Climb in and slowly drive away –

How odd, so many cars today!
