A painter friend of mine called Jacques
Passed me a coffee, strong and black.
“Voici un café grec pour toi:
C’est boire et manger à la fois !”
And if in French you rarely think
That’s “simultaneous food and drink”.
Although I know how odd that sounds
One must admit he has his grounds.
That is about the strength of it
Tongue all flavour; teeth all grit.
It’s up to each of us to judge
If extra taste is worth some sludge.
And though this bitter truth I know
I can’t give up my ‘metrio’.
