No kinder people you will meet
Than those who live right here on Crete:
Unmatched their generosity,
But still one thing distresses me.
It’s drivers who just feel the urge
To drop the window, foul the verge
With soft drink cans, a frappe pot
A ciggy pack…. I’m sure it’s not
The tourists in the summer time
Who try their hand at litter crime.
So much at least to me is clear –
The perpetrators live right here.
Perhaps it’s just I’m rather dense
But this behaviour makes no sense
Unless they throw a mental switch
“It’s not my house or garden, which
Are always spotless – so it’s fine:
It’s someone’s problem, just not mine!”
