ACCOUNT OF AN ACCIDENT

A motorcyclist, worse for drink,

He didn’t stop, he didn’t think.

From out the olive groves, and fast,

Just when a van was driving past,

He shot into the road – and SMACK -

He cartwheeled, landed on his back.

“He had no helmet”, my friend said

“And hit the asphalt with his head!”

“Glück im Unglück”, Germans say

And luck there was that summer day.

The quick reactions of the driver

Trained in first aid as a diver.

To make the miracle complete,

A doctor in the other seat,

Who made him comfortable until

The ambulance came up the hill.

When asking next day how he fared

My friend was told his life was spared.
